CrossFit is a workout that helps individuals get healthier, toned and fitter without discouraging or exercising its members for trying. Lindsay Harrison had said one of the biggest myths about CrossFit is that you’re going to get huge or bulky, but the truth is you simply get healthier and stronger from this work out.

“After my first workout I was so winded, and I’ve never done something that’s made me feel so amped up but tired at the same time,” said Kelly McCabe a senior majoring in human nutrition, food and exercise at Virginia Tech. “ It’s just a really good time, and I’ve managed to gain such a confidence boost from it. But my favorite aspect of it is that I feel so much more powerful now than I did a year ago.”

Many female college students have found a sanctuary thanks to CrossFit; they’ve found a place where their health can be catered to physically and mentally. Many of the females at the gym had made it clear that they enjoyed it for the results that it helped them produce as well as the encouraging atmosphere around them.

“CrossFit is a lot of exercises put together, in a short amount of time. There are a lot of body weight exercises as well as Olympic exercises, mixed with some gymnastics and running,” said Harrison, an intern at CrossFit Blacksburg and a human nutrition, food and exercise major at Virginia Tech. “The thing that’s special about CrossFit is that you aren’t doing the same workout each day, so its muscle confusion which intern gets you the results that you’re looking for.”

Many of the female college students who have joined have spoken about the team aspect that comes along with CrossFit. The ability for former athletes to have that one on one training that they personally need.

“You get the coaching aspect as well as the team sensation; it forms a community, almost like a family atmosphere here,” said Harrison. “You really just form relationships and have a sense of encouragement when you’re working out.”
