Sean Simms has been a proud hokie even before he actually got accepted to Virginia Tech.
“A family friend wanted me to take the tour at Virginia Tech, and once I got a whiff of the hokie spirit I ended up loving it,” said Simms. He was quick to apply, and in a matter of months got the great news.
“I was born in Winston, North Carolina, but my family was constantly moving around,” said Simms. “It’s honestly a great state and I would love to move back and live there one day, I just couldn’t help moving away when I saw Virginia Tech.”
Simms really liked the atmosphere that the campus portrayed. He loved how beautiful the campus was whether in the winter or in summer. He also mentioned how prominent the culture behind being a hokie is, every corner you turn you’re in sight of the great hokie stone. He mentioned how any visitor who wasn’t acquainted with the hokie stone wouldn’t know how important it is to a hokie.
Simms has met quite a few interesting people at Virginia Tech, ranging from faculty and students but the most impacting individual he’s met so far is Bria Cook. “We have a great friendship; she’s my A1 from day 1.” They met at the campus bookstore, where both Simms and Cook were looking for the same text book. “We had Comm 1015, Geology, Theater and even LAHS together, it was actually really funny,” said Cook. It was without a doubt since then the two have been stuck together.
Throughout the years Simms has had several memorable experiences at Tech but his favorite so far was the Virginia Tech vs. Ohio State game this past September. “Even though we lost it was one of the best games I’ve ever been to here” Simms said. “I got to spend the whole day with friends getting into the hokie spirit and just having a good time.”
Simms is a multimedia journalism major at Tech, and considering a minor in cinema. “I spent last semester working with VTTV on their sketch segment, and it was honestly a great way for me to get more involved in my major,” Simms said.
However, Simms mentioned, even though there are programs like VTTV at Tech, the communication program could definitely do better. He said it’s a great experience and the professors are very one on one with their students but the program has potential to expand.
Simms is a junior this year and is excited to see what new memories will be made in the next two years. He says he’s definitely going to miss the campus once he graduates, but is eager to get that Virginia Tech diploma.
